If your making a corset for corset training purposes you’ll find that almost any corset pattern can be customized to use for a tight lacing corset. However, if you plan to make a corset dress you’ll find it both harder to find a sewing pattern and harder to find a customizable corset pattern.

Firstly I’d like to say that for the purpose of waist training a corset dress isn’t really suitable, at least not for everyday wear, an underbust is still the most suitable tight lacing corset as it allows the most freedom of movement. If you have a party coming up though, or another special occasion, a corset dress is perfect.

You’ll want an overbust corset pattern (unless you intend to wear something under the dress) that comes down over the hips ideally. Decide how long you want the skirt of the dress i.e. above the knees, over the knees. Work out how much length you need to add to the bottom of the pattern. Now decide on the flair you want (how large a circle the bottom edge makes). Now use dressmakers pattern paper to extend each pattern piece down and out from about where your top hip line is (roughly the level of your hip bone).

Tomorrow I’ll go over the ideal material for corset dresses.
