How To Make Corsets
If you’re new to corsetry it can look pretty daunting from the outside but learning to make corsets is just a process of developing certain specialised sewing skills, just like learning to make any garment. The key is finding the right information to help you develop those skills. So fear not if you’re completely new to making corsets, we were all there once. Just concentrate on building up your knowledge.
This collection of tutorials is designed to teach you the basics of how to make a corset, basic construction to finishing touches. If you’ve already made a corset or two it should help you level up your corset making skills by hopefully adding to the sewing techniques you’re learnt so far. It’s a work in progress so not everything will be covered to begin with and any suggestion or additions are very welcome.?

A complete run through of all the equipment and specialised materials (including fabrics) you’ll need to know about to create a corset for yourself. Do you know the difference between your steels? Where to use spiral steels to add ease of movement or decoration? Which parts of the corset really need the more rigid flat or sprung steel bones? And while we’re looking into the two different types of corset steels, we’ll also learn about the perils of plastic boning vs steel boning and how bone placement is affected by your choices.
When you’re starting out it can be difficult to find good places to shop for all the corsetry supplies you need. Here I’ve put together a list of all the corset making suppliers I know of online. Alongside your corset supplies you’re going to need to get yourself a corset sewing pattern or two. The above article covers the various places online you can get your corset making bits, which includes the sewing patterns themselves. This page however, is dedicated to my own designs. Here you’ll find a link to my free corset pattern to make it easier for you to get started if you’re making a corset on a budget (see also the free pattern download button in the section above) as well as a pattern offer I’ve put together to make progressing your skills a little bit cheaper.
